With rain, wind and other hazardous weather conditions, your roof takes a pounding. Maintaining your roof is essential if you want to minimize the number of repairs it will need. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for responsible roof care:
1) Avoid Pressure Washers
Although a pressure washer can improve the appearance of your house, keep it away from your roof if you are not a professional. It can loosen the granules in your shingles, leaving the asphalt vulnerable to UV rays.
2) Keep An Eye Out For Potential Issues
If your shingle roof is more than 10 years old, look it over when it is windy to see if the shingles are lifting. You may need to repalce the adhesive layer underneath. In addition, prevent downspouts from the upper part of the roof from leaking onto the lower part so that it doesn’t become worn prematurely.
3) Stay Off Your Roof In Extreme Weather
Sometimes, you need to walk on your roof to fix a problem, but be careful not to damage the shingles. They are most brittle in very cold weather and most soft in hot conditions. The best time of day to walk on shingles is early in the day during the summer and later in the afternoon during the winter.
